Intellectual Asset Measurement Project

The purpose of this project is the upgrading and analysis of the database for measuring intellectual assets. We believe that the social significance of the results of the project is immense. Our effort in this project is to gather new company valuation including intangible intellectual assets and actual cases, and possibly to yield valuable information for economic policy and the accounting practices of firms.

It is said that the American economic recovery of the 1990s depended largely on success in raising productivity through the IT revolution. The amount of IT resources, such as computer and communication devices, that have contributed to increased productivity has been measured.

However, unexplained economic phenomena have been detected since 2000. The phenomena could not be explained by the analysis of IT resources of hardware alone. For this reason, intangible intellectual assets, which are considered as complementary to physical IT resources in increasing productivity, have come to the fore.

Research on intangible intellectual assets has highly-practical significance. The research findings in economics, business management, and accounting are integrated across academic disciplines to produce even more fruitful results.

The findings of projects are published monthly in the "Geppo (Monthly Report)" by the Japan Economic Research Institute, entitled "Knowledge Asset Management in the Global Economy."
