University Museum of History

The Gakushuin University Museum of History was established in 1975 to collect, research, classify, preserve and provide access to a variety of historical source materials. Presently, the museum has more than 130,000 items in total, which can be divided into three groups according to the subjects they concern: Japanese noble families and court officials of the medieval period; feudal lords, their vassals and country squires of later times; persons closely involved with Gakushuin ? among whose students have been members of the Imperial household and the nobility of old ? in the modern and present eras.

The research and classification results are published in our catalogues and annual bulletins. The museum also holds exhibitions with special topics at least twice a year to make a group of carefully selected and studied items from our collection available for public viewing.

Anyone can have free access to a wide range of reference materials in our collection. The source materials that have undergone basic research and classification can be accessed by appointment. The office and the reading room of the museum are located in a wooden building of the former school library, built in 1909, which itself is registered as a national cultural asset.

In the universityfs educational system, the museum takes charge of educating trainee curators, and it organizes public lectures three times a year.
