Professor
Clinical Psychology, Focusing-Oriented Psychotherapy

When providing psychological assistance to children and young clients, I try to do so by considering their developmental process or what they are interested in. The heart of practical work is not psychotherapy in a narrow sense, but supportive psychotherapy that includes learning assistance, casework, and so on. In psychotherapy for adults, the mainstay of my clinical work is focusing-oriented psychotherapy introduced by Gendlin. Rather than applying ‘focusing’ directly to the client, it is more important to promote understanding about the client by using what is being experienced inside my body (“felt sense,” as termed in the focusing method) during the interview.
