Gタンパク質共役受容体とは:
Gタンパク質共役受容体(GPCR)は、人間の感覚である光、匂い、味のセンサーとしての働きを有する。さらに脳内では神経伝達物質の受容体として働き、情動・睡眠などの遅い情報伝達、学習・記憶の基礎であるシナプスの可塑的変化などに関わっている。また、今日医療の現場で使用されている臨床薬30〜50%の標的でもある。GPCRの高次構造を解明することによって、副作用の少ない医薬品を理論的に推測する可能性が広がる。また、ロボットのセンサーを考えるヒントになる。
多くのGタンパク質共役受容体は、相手である神経伝達物質やホルモンが同定されていない。これらオーファン受容体(孤児受容体)の内在性リガンド(ホルモンや神経伝達物質)の同定も重要な課題である。神経系でのGタンパク質を介する遅い神経情報伝達の全容の解明は、脳での情動、学習などの理解に必須であると同時に、ニューロコンピューターを考える際にヒントを与えることが期待される。
