The History of Gakushuin

1847

school for court nobles (Imperial School) opens on the eastern side of the Kyoto Imperial Palace.

1849

The school is named "Gakushuin" upon being granted the plaque bearing the school name "Gakushuin" written by Emperor Komei.

1870

Kyoto Gakushuin is abolished.

1877

The Peers' School opens in Kanda Nishiki-cho, Tokyo. The new school inherits the plaque and the name of Gakushuin.

1884

The school becomes a state school under the jurisdiction of the Imperial Household Ministry.

1885

The Peeresses' School opens in Yotsuya.

1888

Gakushuin is relocated to the former site of the Imperial College of Engineering in Toranomon.

1889

The Peeresses' School is relocated to Nagata-cho.

1890

Gakushuin is relocated to Yotsuya. The first issue of the Hojin-kai Journal is published.

1906

The Peeresses' School is merged with Gakushuin and renamed Gakushuin Girls' Division.

1908

Gakushuin Boys' School is relocated to Mejiro.

1910

The first issue of Shirakaba is published by students and alumni.

1912

Numazu Off-Campus Swimming Facility opens.

1918

The Girls' Division is relocated to Aoyama and renamed Gakushuin Girls' School.

1945

The school grounds and buildings at Mejiro, Aoyama and Yotsuya are partly destroyed by air raids.
Gakushuin and Gakushuin Girls' School amend their educational systems and open their doors to sons and daughters of the general public.

1946

Gakushuin Girls' School is relocated to Toyama.

1947

Gakushuin Foundation is inaugurated as a private school through the integration of Gakushuin and Gakushuin Girls' School.
The Primary School, Boys' Junior High School and Girls' Junior High School are established under the new system.

1948

The Boys' Senior High School and Girls' Senior High School are established under the new system.

1949

Gakushuin University is established (Faculty of Letters and Politics, Faculty of Science).

1950

Gakushuin Women's Junior College Division is established.

1951

Gakushuin School Corporation is established. The Gakushuin School Song is officially adopted.

1952

Gakushuin University's Faculty of Letters and Politics is reorganised into the Faculty of Politics and Economics and the Faculty of Letters.

1953

Gakushuin University Graduate School (Graduate School of Humanities and Graduate School of Science) is established.
Gakushuin Women's Junior College Division is renamed Gakushuin Women's Junior College.

1963

Gakushuin Kindergarten is established.

1964

The Faculty of Law and Faculty of Economics are established in the University.

1978

Gakushuin celebrates the centennial anniversary of its founding and holds a commemoration ceremony.

1998

The Women's Junior College is reorganised to establish Gakushuin Women's College (Faculty of Intercultural Studies).

2004

The Professional Course in Law (Graduate School of Law) is established in the University.
The Graduate School of International Cultural Relations is established in the Gakushuin Women's College.

2016

The Faculty of International Social Sciences is established in the University.
