Kendo Club

The Gakushuin Primary School Kendo Club was established in 1965. A consistent coaching system all the way from primary school to university level has remained in place up to the present time. University students and alumni coaches come to the club to instruct students.

Practice takes place once or twice a month on Saturdays for two hours. In addition, two morning practice sessions are held every week.

Throughout the year, there are also exchange matches with seniors from other Gakushuin’s other kendo clubs, summer camps, and special winter training exercises. There are also matches outside of Gakushuin and 1 kyu (ikkyu), the 1st grade certificate exams (for Grade 6 students only).

With repeated practice over three years, the Grade 4 students who quickly felt exhausted when they first held a bamboo sword, develop a solid posture and swing. Their progress is quite astonishing.

By learning to train rigorously together with their peers, the club members develop outstanding mental and physical strength.
