Moral Studies
Goals of Moral Studies
- 1To understand ethics and learn self-reflection and think about things from many different perspectives.
- 2To foster deeper thinking about one’s way of life and the ability and spirit to make ethical judgments.
- 3To develop the willingness and attitude to look at the various ethical challenges in our personal lives and to try to resolve them independently.
Points of focus
- Basic lifestyle habits
Students should value basic lifestyle habits not only in learning activities, but also in everyday life. We guide students to follow proper decorum using appropriate language, wearing appropriate clothing, and displaying good manners. Students should also pay attention to their health and safety at all times. Developing good habits will help them to lead a pleasant school life. - Independence and autonomy
Unless students see different kinds of problems as their own and develop a desire to solve them, they will not be able to think for themselves. By formulating and presenting concrete examples from daily life, we make them more interested and willing to proactively try and solve problems. Independent thinking for oneself and always having strong values leads to “honesty,” which is the highest value of Gakushuin Primary School. Getting students to realise that they need to overcome all the challenges they face, one by one, by themselves, helps them to develop a strong, resolute mind that is undeterred by peer pressure. - Respect for life and compassion for others
For children to grow up healthy, both physically and mentally, it is vital for teachers to pay constant attention to their relationships and remember to provide them with detailed guidance. It is difficult to nurture empathy, compassion, and gratitude to others unless students are sincere. By combining learning activities through various events promoting interactions between students of the same grade and different grades, and the cooperation of their families, we provide students with a broad and deep learning experience.
Basic attitude in everyday life
The way people greet and talk to each other and how they conduct themselves are essential aspects of the Japanese virtue of life. We nurture students’ appropriate and elegant manners in language, attire and posture. Cultivating these basic attitudes will make life in Japan richer and more rewarding.
Self-reliance and autonomy
Honesty is the most important quality for students of the Primary School.
We nurture students’ willingness to think deliberately and to think in other people’s shoes when they encounter problems in determining right and wrong, and pursuing public benefits, so they can put into practice what they sincerely believe to be right.
Respect for life and compassion for others
Realizing that life is irreplaceable in its many connections gives rise, naturally, to empathy, compassion, and gratitude to others. Understanding that people live as individuals within a web of relationships helps students to appreciate the importance of living together in harmony.
