Social Studies
Goal of Social Studies
- To provide instruction and guidance with the aim of nurturing the qualities and abilities needed to create a better society. For this reason, learning is focused on problem-solving, to enable students to grasp problems and pursue solutions independently.
Point of focus
- To promote problem-discovery and problem-solving, by stressing the importance of experiential learning, interactive learning, and learning that leads to deeper understanding.
Learning through experience and interaction
Taking advantage of the unique characteristics of our school and community, we place emphasis on enriching their view of our society and culture through activities such as study tours and field trips, observations, and experiences.
Through discussions and interviews, students learn about various viewpoints and values, thereby helping them to deepen their own thinking. This makes them better prepared to consider what they can and wish to do in their future.
Engaging proactively with society
To deepen their interests and concerns further, students communicate the results of their studies to their peers by creating posters, newspapers, opinion pieces, and other media works.
By training students to make use of what they learn to envision and aspire to shape a better society in the future, we foster students’ desire to engage proactively within it.
Reflecting on the past and connecting to the future
To create the society of the future, we believe it is important to reflect on the past and connect it to the future. We also teach classes that emphasize history and traditional culture, using the “History of Gakushuin Primary School,” a book we produced ourselves, and other materials.
