My research field is English and Japanese syntax and semantics, and I have been working on passive and causative sentences, existential and possessive sentences, anaphora, movement, preposition stranding, quantifier scope, unaccusativity, inversion, and other areas. I have been interested in the syntactic and/or functional factors for the acceptability of such English and Japanese constructions, and have been working over the last twenty years with Professor Susumu Kuno at Harvard University, the central figure in the grammatical theory of Functional Syntax. Our books include Grammar and Discourse Principles (University of Chicago Press, 1993), Quantifier Scope (Kurosio Publishers, 2002) and Functional Constraints in Grammar (John Benjamins, 2004).
