About the Research Institute for Humanities

Past and Present

The Institute was established on April 1, 2001, at the time that the Faculty of Letters Joint Language Institute was reorganized into the Gakushuin University Faculty of Letters. Its purpose is to contribute to the progress and development of academia by conducting collaborative research concerning the humanities. To achieve this, the Institute has set up several collaborative research projects, held seminars, lectures, and symposia, conducted research and investigations, and published these results. In the year of its establishment, three collaborative research projects were undertaken, and new projects have been initiated every year since then. In 2016, nine projects were started, all of which will span over the course of several years rather than one year.
