I teach the course “Practical studies on film theory.” My interest includes writers and artists whose works are influenced by experiences and events during World War II. War and disaster seem to have been the oldest and the most universal themes in human artistic activities. Many artists today still produce works with a sensitive reaction to wars and calamities. Regardless of fiction or non-fiction, these works show a tension between creation and a recognition of reality that creating a new way of expression renews our recognition of reality. In class, we aim to focus on how artists receive the impact of indescribable, inexpressible experiences and transform them into a work. We also explore issues of representation in visual arts in parallel with literary attempts to transform non-verbal into verbal things.
