Life Science, the field that stands in the forefront of innovative discoveries

Due to advancements in molecular research, biology, once a science that simply observed organisms, through incorporating aspects of chemistry and physics, is developing into a field called the Life Science.

The complex nature of organisms was always understood only vaguely, however, as the scientific approach is being refurbished and developed, this complex nature of organisms is becoming more clearly understood. As the world's interest is peaked with every knew discovery resulting in a string of questions, it is safe to say that Life Science lies in the forefront of novel discoveries.

The possiblity to shape the future by revealing phenomena of life at the molecular level

It is said that there is only a little difference between the genes of a chimpanzee and a human. The basic bodily functions, and creation of cells between the two organisms is practically the same. It is this slight difference that sets us apart from the chimpanzee. By researching the genes and cells of organisms we call "model creatures," finding similarities can help lead to creating new treatments for disease, or to creating healthier and longer lives. Cancer is where the cells in your body cannot control their dividing, continue to amass, and may eventually lead to death. However, if we can reveal what is going on at the molecular level, it may be possible to eliminate cancer from this world.

With top level faculty and brand new facilities, we push forward with our research to solve problems

A unique factor of Life Science is that findings in its basic research has a big impact on society. It is known that plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen into the atmosphere, however, if the details of this process can be explained at the molecular level, it may lead to solving problems regarding global warming.

In the newly built Department of Life Science at Gakushuin University, top level researchers have gathered, and along with top-of-the-line facilities and equipment, research at the highest level can be conducted here. A suitable environment has been prepared for undergraduate and graduate level students to make new world scale discoveries.

We eagerly await the participation of any student who is curious, who has the heart to overcome any challenge, and has interest towards Life Science.

Institute for Biomolecular Science

Since being established in 1991, this institute has installed cutting edge technology to research the structure, function, and the regeneration property of biomolecules. The "Institute for Biomolecular Science" is fighting to be in the forefront of the postgenome era, aiming to discover how exactly proteins affect human life. Students in the biological sciences begin experimenting and researching day and night when they become seniors. Additionally, because the research at this institute is public, researchers from several companies are welcome here. 学習院大学理学部 生命分子科学研究所
