CHIBA, Isao
Professor
─Modern Japanese History

I specialize in modern Japanese history, particularly in political and diplomatic history during the Meiji period. Starting from research on the cause of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), I have analyzed Japanese diplomacy from 1904 to 1919 from the perspective of the formation of “old diplomacy.” I am also studying the Russo-Japanese War itself as well as then Prime Minister Taro Katsura. Recently, I have become interested in the politics and diplomacy during the Okubo Administration and the Sino -Japanese War, as well as the relationship between the formation of modern historical studies in Japan and the state/society.
