SHIMADA, Makoto
Professor
─Ancient Western History

I specialize in ancient Western history, particularly in ancient Rome. My field of study is mainly the period from the end of the Roman Republic to the middle of the Roman Empire, which is from about the latter half of the 2nd century B.C. to the 2nd century A.D. I was first interested in Augustus, the first emperor of the Roman Empire, and after reading the works and letters of Cicero, a politician and an orator in the later Republic, and authors of Latin works in the Silver Age, such as Pliny and Petronius, I extended my interest to the period of the Republic and the mid-period of the Empire.
